Do you want to go to a certain one?

I was just gonna open it up and randomly pick a story!

Oh WOW, living dangerously!

I hope that like that story, nonono just joking hahahaa

Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles, I’m Christon and joining us today is

Bryan Rafanelli from and author of “A Great Party” and he’s a celebrity event

planner and I would like you to just randomly open a page in this book and

tell us a quick story about one of these fabulous party’s.

Are you doing it or am I doing it?

You want me to do it?

yeah !

okay ! Ready and…….

Alright ! This is a polo barn

right in Aspen Colorado and what’s amazing about this is

that you could actually literally eat off the floor in this polo barn, it’s so

spectacular, but it had this amazing metal armature that shot across it , so

you know it was screaming for 10,000 Bogan via hanging from it, and so

that’s actually what we did. This is a wedding with 450 people. This is an enormous

stage with a 50-piece Orchestra all in white jacket, it was stunning, and it was

black-tie too and so when you were outside it was like this giant horse

barn so we wanted to make sure that when you stepped in you felt like you were at

a beautiful glamorous black-tie affair.

Tell us a little bit about your book tour.

Well, where do I begin? Actually to me it’s like one long party, so I

literally get to go across the country, and what’s been so amazing is people

like you and people like Candy have been throwing these beautiful lunches and

cocktail parties that turn into parties so it’s not just about sitting there

signing books, it’s about storytelling, because that’s what this book is really

all about, but also we’ve had some good times, you know we’ve had confetti

cannons and DJs and and that’s the idea.

He is adding me to the guest list as we speak. Gentlemen!

Lot’s of champagne….

That’s what this tour is all about,

so I’m very excited and and we’ve been going up and down the east coast

and we’re going to Palm Beach, and Houston, and Dallas we’re going out to

the west coast. I was just in London. It’s been fun, we’re not fooling around

I’m gonna do a little flip through this book because the pictures

are so very fabulous. You have to get one today. Where can they find you?

They can find us on our website www.rafanellievents.com, @rafanellievents instagram

We are on Amazon, go to your local bookstore and especially here, right in Newport.

I got this at ” Island Books “

“Island Books, I was going to say go to amazing “Island Books”

and get a beautiful copy of “A Great Party”

Thank you so much guys, we look forward to seeing you on

Newport Living and Lifestyles

Thank you!

Thanks Bryan

Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles and Welcome to the November photo contest.

I’m Christon Gibson and joining us today is Meagan Zarba and guest photographer Vessi VLasseva.

Say that 3 times while your dancing. It’s go a good disco beat to it.

Today we’re gonna find out who the winner is of the monthly photo contest

How do you enter the monthly photo contest?

You have to hashtag #NLandL

Which stands for Newport Living and Lifestyles!

Fantastic! so Vessi did a great job of picking only five photos.

I don’t know how you did it.

It was difficult.

How many were there?

There’s a lot

A lot! I only looked for the month of November. I didn’t look past the month of November.

There is probably at least 100, I would say

Wow!

Yeah, people are doing a great job of hashtagging.

Every winner, every month, gets a gift certificate and a bottle of bubbly

Today our host is Meagan Zarba

Would you like to tell us something about what the winners will receive and what you do.

Absolutely, I’m a licensed massage therapist and health coach and I

work with people. I specialize in helping people have less pain in their

body, chronic pain, acute pain, I work with people who are in rehab programs, people

who just want to feel better in their body and I’m

offering $100 giftcard to come work with me in any capacity.

I practice deep tissue, myofascial release, just simple relaxation, Swedish massage,

I also incorporate marma point therapy, which comes from Ayurveda

if you’ve heard of it, if not, if you’re curious, come talk to me.

I could probably talk for hours about everything that I do.

I do have two locations.

On Monday and Tuesday I’m located here at Stella Mare in Newport it’s 91 Long Wharf and then

my other location is Wednesday and Thursday in Middletown, inside Wyatt Square, its 575 East Main Road.

You can see me at either of those locations and

I’m really excited to work with you and meet whoever the winner is

They can book appointments for you straight through Facebook and Instagram.

Facebook @massagewithmeag Instagram @meaganzarba

Also, by my phone number, which I’m not sure if we are putting that out there….

Let’s do it!

Go for it!

Yeah! Call me! 978-870-8161

or you can reach me at my email

which is Maegan@everydayohm.com

my website is EverydayOhm.com

Your Instagram and Facebook?

My Instagram is @MeaganZarba and

You can find me on LinkedIn by the same name @meaganzarba

I’m the only one that has that name.

Well I love your name and this is a beautiful space to work in with a piano and gongs, really gorgeous space.

It’s a really special space. Stella Mare is also used as a rental space for micro weddings, corporate parties, private

parties and any of that jazz. It is a gorgeous place to hold events.

Yes, I teach yoga here. The owner of this

space is super passionate about holistic health and wellness and she invites any

of that to be part of the space when it’s not being rented out for events so

We are actually home to Newport Kundalini , which is a type of yoga.

It’s a really big community here.

Every Tuesday night there’s a class at 6:00PM Kundalini Yoga and

on Tuesday mornings I teach a regular Hatha alignment based flow and

I also do private yoga, small group yoga and just teaching people how to move their bodies in general.

My whole background is in exercise science and psychology originally.

I used to be a personal trainer so I’ve been studying the body

and the workings of the mind and the body for probably 15 years.

How did you guys meet?

Through my husband and her boyfriend.

I was dying one day. I was having horrible, horrible back pains and her boyfriend who works with my husband,

said you have to go see Meagan, she is life changing and she fixed me.

I’m honored to be a part of anybody’s healing process and thank you very much.

Vessi tell us about your photography, your history, how you got started, your passions.

I am new to Newport. I moved here from Colorado in May.

I started photographing when I was 14 years old in high school.

I did it as a second major in college and then once I graduated college.

I decided that photography was going to be my side hustle.

About 3 – 3 1/2 years ago it turned into my full-time job.

I’ve been doing it ever since.

I’ve had a lot of clients in Colorado that I’ve worked with.

I primarily work with interior designers on interior design photography.

I do a lot of lifestyle shoots with people and products.

That is what my main focus is, however I’m open to new ventures in photography,

which is really really cool.

Then I also do some graphic design work as well, because my other major,

because I couldn’t just be an art major, according to my parents, was advertising.

I do all of that stuff as well.

Some clients use me as kind of a little more of a full-service, small boutique-y agency,

others just come to me for a la cart services

It just depends on what people need.

A women of many facets. How can they find you?

You can find me at VessiVlasseva.com

and my photography, design work and all of my contact information can be found there.

Fantastic, thanks ladies, are we ready to check out some of these photos?

I picked 5 photos off of the #NLandL hashtag for November.

Should we start with this one? This one is by @MermaidMasterpieces

She’s got fantastic work.

It’s so so pretty. It’s just the sky and the ocean.

It’s just absolutely beautiful.

I love of the colors and the reflections.

I love that it all blends together.

It looks like a painting.

I want to hang it over my bed.

That would be a great canvas.

You get lost in it.

Yes! it’s beautiful!

And it looks very mermaid-ish.

How many likes does she have, 22 others liked it,

so go check out @mermaidmasterpieces

She has really fantastic work and she DESERVES the props!!!

She has a lot of beautiful work on her page, I kind of stalked everybody a little.

She has a Christmas cards! check out her Christmas cards!

CUTE! That’s awesome!

The second photo I chose is by @l_Double

and the reason I liked this photo is because it looks a little urban for Newport

It gives the city a little more of a city, like a big bigger city vibe.

I really like it and also girls who skateboard are cool!

yeah!

That one was personally my favorite.

And this one got 136 likes.

Nice work Lee Abney!

He’s one of the favorites around town by the way

I have not met him.

Each of his photos really exude a lot of mood, you can completely tell that they are his work.

You guys definitely check it out @l_double

You know everybody!

Well doing this, you meet more and more people for sure.

The next photo I chose is by @TimNewportRI

It got a 179 likes. I don’t know if Tim’s a professional photographer or if this is something he does on the side.

He works at Discover Newport and by the way,

He is a bartender at the Black Pearl, so go check him out there as well.

He’ is always out and about highlighting Newport for Discover Newport

Cool! I saw a bunch of photos.

It’s just really, just such a pretty composition.

Calming.

Even the 3 that you picked so far really show so many different sides of Newport so look forward to seeing more.

Yeah, I tried to do that.

I thought that was beautiful.

It’s very calming and relaxing and this is actually a snapshot of the video that he had.

You can just hear the birds chirping and it’s really beautiful.

We couldn’t print that.

Our next contestant is @emdiggity_

She got 124 likes on her image. It’s a picture of her and her dog, I think at the beach.

So cute! I love it !The dog is on point !

Yes! You don’t know how many pictures I have tried to get

of my dog hanging out the window and I cannot do it!

They are not paying attention.

She really captured this so perfectly.

Even as a photographer, I can never nail anything like this, ever.

So good job, way to go, this is perfect,

you should frame it, I hope it’s on your wall, I love it.

I actually want to get a picture of him, which I’ve been trying to do for so long, with the caption that reads

“and I always think they’re waving at me, like a baby in a carriage”

cause they are always waving at the dog like they are so cute!

Good job

Last photo is by @K__Elizabeth.

She got, oh gosh, 968 likes!

She’s pretty popular! I have not met her yet but we should definitely make that happen!

I just loved this photo at the beach, it’s so pretty.

The lighting.

She actually has verbiage here reads,

“Stormy night” so it must have been a stormy night.

It’s just a very pretty, peaceful beach image which just makes me think of Newport.

I love how she captured so many different colors on the beach and the sky it’s really popping with that blue.

What do you like about it?

I love that you can see the storms starting to roll in but it looks so the calm and peaceful.

There’s really a lot going on to it.

I feel like it brings in a lot of different moods rather than being cohesively one.

That’s @K__Elizabeth so check out her stuff.

Vessi being our professional guest photographer,

What is the winner of November!

It is so hard to choose and I love them all and I wish everyone could win but

I am going to go with @MermaidMasterpieces

Just because I would hang this on my wall if it was printed on a canvas. I think it’s beautiful!

Congratulations! Great ! Fantastic ! so we can invite @mermaidmasterpieces here together with us and

take a group photo and we can post that as well!

We look forward to seeing you !

Excited to meet you!

Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles

I’m Christon and we are at the

2019 Newport International Boat Show and

joining us today is Andrew Savage from Boston Yacht Sales, Welcome

Thank you

What a beautiful and gorgeous day we have here.

This is perfect boat show weather today. We are thrilled, the docks are full.

This gonna be a great great weekend for us.

Tell us a little bit about you, where are you from?

Sure, I’m from Marblehead Massachusetts

I grew up in Maine, near where these beautiful boats were built and

I work with Boston Yacht Sales here out of Weymouth as well as Falmouth and the Marblehead office.

How’d you even get into the industry ?

You know it’s a second life for me. It’s something I’m really passionate about.

I’ve been with them for five years now. It was a funny story actually.

I was looking for my next boat. I knew it was gonna be a Sabre or a Back Cove.

I started working with them and loved the brands, love the people and it’s a family business.

That worked out perfectly, timing was great for me and been with them ever since.

Where do you sell? What’s your basic geographical area?

My geographical area is New England primarily. We work with Sabre in Back Cove in Massachusetts and in Rhode Island.

The boats are built up in Maine, so we have a lot of clients up in that area as well.

What attracted you specifically to Boston Yacht Sale’s?

It’s the people. This industry is a small industry but it’s all about relationships and the people.

We are really fortunate to have people that have been working in this industry for over 50 years and really care about their clients.

So, so far in five years what’s your most sentimental testimonial?

You know it’s really interesting we get so many families on these boats,

they are really couples and multi-generational boats.

That it’s not one particular instance but it’s the time that these boats allow families and

multi generations to have together on the water.

If I’m out off Stellwagen watching the whales and all of a sudden two other boats pull up and

they’re my clients and I see them with their families out there, that’s what

gets me really excited and about what we do.

And whales !

And Whales,

That’s a good secondary plus.

Well , that’s the great thing about these boats, they have lots of range, people can take them up

and down the coast, they can go to Florida on them for the winter

What are some unique things about these particular boats that most people love?

Sure, so Sabre and Back Cove are sister companies. They’re down east traditional

Maine style boats, really set up for comfort and cruising, but also very

functional for day use. We have couples that can live on them for months

at a time and other families that just use them as a day boat .

I have got to see these closets!

We’ve got room for everything! Wardrobe after wardrobe.

They’re classic in style,

Yes, really nice lines, they’re classic, they’re clean.

Classic Maine built boats.

I love this leather interior that you guys have on this one.

I love the trim, the classic cherry interior so it’s a very yacht feeling,

but a very traditional yacht feeling but within a modern propulsion package and modern technologies.

What kind of engines are you guys working with?

The Sabres all come with either Volvo Penta IPS drives or Cummins Zeus drives, which are pod driven boats.

These are twin Diesel’s. The pods allow for joystick functionality.

I love the joystick

It makes around the dock, it makes everybody look like a superstar!

Even I can use the joystick to dock

Especially, grand kids and kids get on the boat,

If they’ve been playing video games all their life, this is child’s play for them.

Oh perfect

Then the sister company, Back Cove, is a little bit more of a traditional economical kind of lobster boat functionality,

where they are all single engine outboard boats.

What’s your hottest selling product?

The hottest selling product right now for Sabre is the one we’re standing on right now.

The 45, which is a new model about 18 months ago. Really popular twin cabin design and

then for Back Cove they introduced at this show last year, we introduced the 34o ,

which is the first outboard version of Back Cove.

We can’t keep those in stock.

Put your order in now

People can custom design these boats, I imagine.

Within a platform, yes, there’s a long options sheets, custom build them.

We often have them in stock too

See there guys, where else would you want to go?

That’s right

Can you give us any insight scoop to what may be coming and for next year 2020?

Yeah, we’re really excited about next year, for both brands.

Sabre is coming out with a new 58.

Actually, that hull number one is just about complete.

We’re hoping to see that this winter.

That’s been so popular that we’ve sold the first 13 or 14 just off the drawings.

Beautiful three cabin three stateroom boat.

Then Back Cove just yesterday here at the show announced

their second outboard boat which will be a 39-foot, 39o, 39-foot two cabin boat.

Since you have new product all the time, you must have a great celebrity clientele.

We do, If I told you, I would have to kill ya, right?

Yeah right! Just throw me overboard!

If you keep your eye out on the water you’ll notice enough out there,

we try to respect their privacy.

Do they have special celebrity flags, like a burgee, on the front?

They try to be incognito out there as well, that’s their family time as well.

That’s a great opportunity for them to get away from the hustle and bustle.

I’d like to ask,  Do you have a signature dance move?

I know your kids will be able to tell all, but they’re not here today.

yeah, they would kill me.

We’ll do it together

Well I think I would just have to go with raise the roof

Alright! Raise the roof!

Boston Yacht Sales!

That is what we are hoping to do here this week

Oh I love that! That’s great!

How can people reach you?

The best place to start is our website www.bostonyacht.com

We’ve got physical offices in Marblehead, in North Weymouth, as well Falmouth.

You can find all the information for all of our brokers and all the boats we represent on the website.

All right, What’s your favorite boat show of all time?

It’s got to be the Newport International Boat Show, right?

This is it! Look at the weather, the people can’t beat it!

Thank you so much!

That was great talking to you, getting to know you, getting to know your business and

We look forward to seeing you on

Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles

I’m Christon and

We are at the 2019 Newport International Boat Show with

Tracy Slocum and Sheila Mendlesen

of Pretty Rugged Gear

Hi ladies

Hello!

How exciting! How many times have you guys been to the show?

This was actually our second show, so we’re still newbies

How many shows do you guys go to throughout the year?

We do several different kinds of shows,

We do boat shows because of our blankets really and the waterproof nature that all of the products have

but we also do New York Now shows and AtlantasMart

those types of shows, so it’s like buyers Mart’s. Things like that, yeah

Sheila, tell us a little bit about what we’re looking at here. What is your product?

We started out with our signature flagship blanket which is over here to the right and sitting behind me and they’re

all made out of the luxurious faux fur that’s super soft but what makes this

really unique is that we are the ultimate nautical blanket because we are waterproof windproof.

Waterproof and windproof and faux

and faux

Wow

Yeah it’s a nice unique combination. The blanket was really developed so that you could wrap yourself in the fur so

it’s like beauty on the inside and then you’ve got a backing that’s completely

waterproof and windproof so you can put it on like a wet boat seat or on the

ground and they come in this beautiful waterproof duffel so they’re easy to store.

I don’t want to hide this pink one back here.

That’s the baby.

That is so adorable.

They’re amazing and you know one thing to mention which I know all boaters love

is all the blankets can be embroidered with your boat names which is fun.

Very fun.

Where do you make your product?

We are in Albany New York upstate.

Yeah so not far.

And you guys ship

We ship all over the world.

Which one is your hottest market?

U.S. , we are also branching out the Netherlands, we have a distributor in the Netherlands and also in South Korea.

That’s unique.

That’s for the pet market.

What kind of pet products do you carry?

We have a pet blanket that has the same backing on it so people when they’re outside or in

their cars they use the blankets even in their house. My dog loves them, they’re amazing.

I was gonna ask you guys if you had any celebrity story’s.

Yeah, we do! On our first show that we did in New York Now,

that was February of 2018, we met Oprah’s team which is Rae Ann Herman and

Adam Glassman, who we’ve since become friends with and they just loved our

blankets, at the time that’s all we had, and we knew that we were going to be a

serious contender for Oprah’s Favorite Things, and then it was this time last

year that we found out that we were picked.

What is your hottest selling item?

The caplet right now,

everyday we’re selling so so many, but what’s interesting is, we just introduced two

new products, one of them I’m wearing, this is the pretty puffer.

Again, it’s a completely waterproof shell, actually it’s our first non fur item,

which is interesting, and then the other one is the reversible bomber so this

bomber is a faux mink, it’s our signature mink on one side and then when you

reverse it, it’s a waterproof satin material so Pretty Rugged is really known

for their innovative materials that they use, that we use, and we create as a

company and so with the bomber when you reverse it, it really is two garments in

one and the price point is amazing.

oh it is sooo soft.

The snow leopard is our number one color.

It is luxurious.

No sleeves, it’s hands-free. It’s got a front slip pockets.

Do I look thin?

Yes you do! Actually, do I?

It is very comfortable, you can dress it up, dress it down.

You can put your initial right on the pocket.

It’s kind of like a spin on the fur coat

You can carry your phone in your pocket.

It’s a waterproof pocket.

What are your color schemes?

Our blankets come in seven colors.

The bombers are in two, which is navy and white.

The caplets are in five colors.

We’ve got the leopard, there’s white, there’s navy, there’s black, there’s chocolate.

There’s different color waves for each product.

We’ll be adding new colors, we’re gonna do this caplet in red.

The bomber will come in a leopard as well as the navy.

We’re adding colors all the time.

You guys have retail centers or do you sell out of stores how can people find your products?

We have a website www.PrettyRuggedGear.com

and then we’re at shows, we’re in many stores. We are probably in about 200

boutiques across the country. You can find us in a lot of places.

You guys are a lot of boat shows hosting your wares. What is your favorite boat?

My favorite boat in the whole wide world?

In the whole wide world!

if I had to pick my favorite boat in the whole wide world,

it would have to be a Hinckley.

Any particular Hinckley?

I love the picnic boats, that’s the one that I would choose.

We have a Hacker Craft, which I also love, and they’re beautiful but there’s something about a Hinkley boat

and I think Pretty Rugged should be on every Hinckley boat in the world.

Well, you just might be in luck today! We happen to have a Hinckley Picnic Boat ! That would be so fun!!!

Oh my gosh, we do need to get on there and photograph the blankets, so fun.

I love the Hinckley’s. There’s something about them.

They’re beautiful, but down-to-earth and gorgeous. I just I just think they’re so amazing.

Sheila?

I’m not really a sailor so I would love to have a sailboat someday and learn how to sail.

I grew up on motor boats, Chris Crafts and my dad has a Hacker Craft, too.

They are just beautiful, but there is something about sailing that is so mysterious to that I kind of want to learn how to do it.

I couldn’t get to the other end of the tent, so I don’t know how I would actually read a compass!

Which is an interesting thing to say

since our heritage is really built around my great-great-grandfather who

was the first man to sail around the world alone, Joshua Slocum.

Yes I’m Tracy Slocum, yeah so that’s a really important part of the company and who we are.

In his trepidation, and his adventure and and the things that he did in his life and the chances that he took.

It’s just an amazing story if you’ve never read his book, you should.

It’s called, Sailing Alone Around the World, and

It was a best-seller.

It’s still in print and anyone who sails knows who he is.

Do you guys have a specific slogan that you refer to?

The slogan for the company is “Transforming Your Outdoor Experience”

and really that’s what the products are all about.

It’s about making the times that you spend outside even better.

Whether it’s the caplet or the puffer, that just improves those times because

you’re warm and you’re dry and it’s luxurious and you look great!

How long have you guys been in business together?

Just under two years

You guys have been very successful with this!

We have

How did you come up with this material?

I started sourcing way before this became a company.

I was making the blankets for myself

Cory Siken Photography, right on Thames Street and

Kevin Hegerty from 12 Meter Charters

who’s offering $100 gift certificate and a bottle of bubbly

That’s one ride, right?

One sail on one of the 12 meters in Newport.

Tell us a little bit about 12 Meters,

Where you’re located and your boats.

We’re down on Bowens Wharf. 12 Bowens Wharf

and we have a couple of America’s Cup boats. Colombia and Heritage.

whoever wins this will enjoy a fun sail on hopefully Columbia with me.

Have you ever been on one of the charters?

Yeah I have, actually that’s where I met Kevin years ago .

Certainly one of the best charters in Newport

when you want to get out for an afternoon or an evening.

Have you taken photos of the boats or with the boats?

Yeah they are also some of the most beautiful boats in the harbor for sure.

Certainly these old boats have the graceful lines that new boats just can’t quite match.

Yes, for sure, definitely had some of the most beautiful photos of Columbia.

I am looking around his gallery right now.

So if you want to see some pretty pictures of Columbia come in the gallery.

Do you have any crazy fun stories about your charters that you can actually say out loud?

We meet all types of people. We are on the water every day, we meet people from all walks of life.

When they get on the water it’s a great experience for them.

I have to say he’s been really super busy so it was really hard to put him down.

so we’re really happy to have 12 meters a part of our show today.

Thank you for having us.

Where can people find you on the website? Do they need to buy tickets in advance?

The website is 12MeterCharters.com

or you can come down, we have a little kiosk downtown.

You can buy a ticket there for a fun sail.

We do a lot of corporate events and team-building. We don’t just race on the boat.

We actually just won the 12 Meter World Championships.

Hurray! Congratulations!

Thank you!

That’s so exciting!

yeah I was a pretty extraordinary event.

How many 12 meters were there?

The biggest gathering of 12 meters ever in the US, there were 22

12 meters from all over the world.

Yeah and this was a really busy summer for all of sailing in Newport.

You can see one of the s-class photos behind us here.

We also had the s-class 100th anniversary here in Newport this summer,

which is actually what my new book is about, which my father wrote and I did the photography for.

The S-class was the Herreshoff S class was designed and built up in Bristol RI, Just near by here.

The boats were originally designed in 1919, there were

about a hundred boats built and roughly half of them still exist. We had

21 boats on the bay racing here. There were a few others that are in racing

condition but weren’t able to make it, but still it was extraordinary having so

many of these old boats still racing so competitively, you know, we talked about

racing, well certainly, you can see in the picture behind us that they are tight and still very competitive.

You really have amazing photos, how did you get started in the photography world.

I started in photography back in school.

I was always into out-door adventures and

wanted to be able to show the gorgeous scenery with all my friends and family, when I would come back.

I grew up sailing, so certainly I blame my parents for that aspect of it.

It’s nice to blame your parents for everything, you know, even our personal shortcomings.

Yeah and I’ve just taken it from there.

yeah that’s great

I just saw recently on Facebook that you’re with some really

extraordinary people including Annie Leibovitz.

It was quite an extraordinary event, Greta Thunberg, who is an environmental activist from Sweden was

coming across the Atlantic with Team Milizia which is IMOCA 60 ocean racing team.

They brought her and they sailed her across the Atlantic because

she didn’t want to have the environmental impact of flying in an airplane.

You know, of course, that is also a great media for sailing and promotion of sailing

having her come on this boat. Quantum Sails also sponsored this team and they just

arrived. With the wind of course, you never know when the transatlantic

crossing boat sail boat is going to arrive and they came in late Tuesday

into New York and it was pretty extraordinary to see her and all the

fanfare in New York Harbor, even even despite that lousy weather and then

Annie Leibovitz was out there making a portrait of her as well, so we

got to hang out with her in the morning and it was it was quite a special day.

Where can people find your artwork?

My website CorySilken.com

You can also look for @silkenphotography on Facebook and at @silkenphoto on Istagram.

It’s really fantastic, so you mostly focus in the sailing community?

Mostly yachts, although I do shoot some portraits and some interiors as well.

My work with a number of regatta sponsors and shipyards and private yacht owners and

do some book projects and of course fine art as well around yachting and local scenery.

Cory’s chosen five photos or eight photos? How many photos did you choose today?

We have 8 photos from the Newport Living and Lifestyles photo contest.

We’re gonna take a look at them and hopefully

you’ve chosen the winner so stay tuned to the end and find out who the big winner is!

This first one is a neat shot from @Kara_Ann322

It’s a photograph of the reflection of the bridge at sunset or sunrise and some sunglasses on the beach.

The bridge is very popular, yeah wow, I love the colors in this, almost opalescent, iridescent, fairyland like.

What do you like about it?

I just like the picture.

I just like it.

I like it a lot.

And that’s how you should view photography,

if it’s something that you like, there’s there’s no more rationale needed.

If you like it, you like it, and that’s good enough, that is certainly a lot of my

customers here in the gallery. Something that when you connect with it , that’s that’s all you need to know.

She had 131 likes on this, so that’s great, good job.

Yeah and the next one is from @AnnM816 which is a photograph of bird.

It’s a hummingbird.

A hummingbird, yes.

Gorgeous colors.

Wow, that’s beautiful.

wow it’s so just clear.

Yeah it’s a very crisp image and very very nice with the

pink against the green background. There must have been some other trees

or bushes behind it. Yeah it’s very pretty.

and it’s hard to choose and narrow it down to 10, We have some really great local photographers and

just people with even with their iPhones, so this is, this is not an easy feat,

that’s why I bring in the judge photographers.

Yes and the next one that we have here is from @TimNewportRI and

it’s photograph of Newport Harbor with

some of the rocks in the foreground and it’s a really pretty shot.

Yeah gorgeous the reflection I just love the way the ocean here really picks up on pinks and

The pastels in the clouds and just the curve of the cloud

in the sky really brings your eye into the image very nicely.

I like it.

He likes it, “Mikey Likes It”

The next one is from @JMich78photography which is a

photograph of some poppies in a field with some cloudy sky in the background.

It’s really nice. I think the color of the sky, the kind of blue gray, as it goes

against the bright yellow of the flowers, sunflowers.

It’s a really nice contrast and I’ve seen a lot of these ominous clouds here a lot lately.

Do you like it?

Of course I like it.

Sunflowers are so cool

It’s going to b the ongoing theme of every picture now.

It is.

Alright and and the next one is from @SailOnHopeSan and of course it wouldn’t be very

good if we didn’t have any pictures of boats in here. This is a great

picture of a boat in the fog, with I’m assuming, that’s the sun trying to break

through the background, which is a scene we’ve seen all too often this summer in Newport.

Right Fog.

and you know they won laughs last month too!

Oh did they? okay

Oh yeah! Patrick and Monica, they charter “Hope San”, their sailboat.

They always get really great photos out on the water.

Here we have one from @l_Double

I really like his work a lot.

Reaching into the sun of the road.

Lee Abney has really fantastic stuff you can always, always know when it’s his picture. It’s really unique.

Yeah, you’ll have to check some of his stuff out. Nice work Lee.

230 Likes, that is a lot! Good job

The next one is from @DMN-images

It’s kind of a neat shot at the beach with

some glow sticks I guess.

Do we have rave parties here that I’m not aware of?

Right?

Are you guys going to the rave parties?

Ya know, at 4AM you never know what’s gonna happen.

That’s true.

I don’t think that one was quite a 4AM

A neat shot nonetheless,

Nice creativity in this bunch of images.

DMN_Images, 107 likes, 3 days ago. Good work.

Then this next one which is which is my favorite.

Oh could this possibly be the winner? this is it?

This is the winner! drum roll….

@Anastasia_M_Arnold

Anastasia!

It’s a shot at the beach, with the lifeguard tower and a surfboard and a

group of presumably either surfers or lifeguards more likey.

It’s framed really nicely. It’s got a nice mood to it and just nice muted

color for the scene which works really well with it.

Makes it pop.

A little bit misty on the water.

I love what she says here. What does she say

Stand 5 is my hangout place. I’ve

never enjoyed the beach as much this summer as before, so peaceful.

Congratulations Anastasia Arnold.

Congratulations, great photo.

You can come on down to Cory Silken

store located at 518 Thames Street.

518 Thames Street and collect your bottle of bubbly and you’re sailing tour.

We’ll get a really fun photo with you, right guys?

Yeah absolutely, can’t wait to meet you.

Congratulations to everybody who enters.

Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles.

I’m Christon and we are here with Sarah Nadimpalli from the SIREN Woman’s Coop

and she has put together and organized an entire series just for you

with all the co-op members on La Sirena.

Yes your beautiful boat Christon thank you so much for allowing our SIREN members

who have wonderful businesses, to come on and talk about, not only their businesses

their professional side but their personal side too. I think I’m

gonna get to know you today a little better as well.

I don’t know we’ll see…

You have organized signature questions for everybody today, so this will be really

fun to get to know the deeper side of some of the business owners.

Tell us a little bit about your business.

I opened siren women’s cooperative

along with about 14 founding members one year ago in September . We’ve almost

been in business for a full year and we’re a group of professional women who

come together for one two three monthly talks, that center around topics that

matter to them, such as, work/life manage, women’s health if you’re over 30, telling

your birth story, how to start a startup business. We focus on a range

of personal and professional topics that resonate with women. The talks are

really the beating heart of Siren. We have a lot of fun events, community

collaborations like the one we’re doing with you, many of you know our SIREN book

that’s out and benefiting our community service arm, which is called the “Ready to

Work Exchange” so that’s the the business of SIREN and it’s been a fabulous eye

opening, exciting and enriching year. I’m really thankful to have met you and

so many other women. You are a remember a SIREN.

You are so right,

there are so many great women involved in this program that you’ve started all by yourself.

Well, we have founders and they really contributed.

I kind of say I’m the catalyst, I’m the

lightning rod, but really, you know, at our meetings

members shape what happens, they shape the talks that we host, they shape the

events that happened, the the culture and the tone of the group, really comes out of

member meeting. I can’t, I really cannot take all the credit.

Well somebody with this ambition and this thought is pretty deep person so

let’s get to know a little bit about you. What are some of the things, hobbies

activities or interests that you may get lost in?

Oh so I lose time in painting.

I use acrylic paints and canvas, my favorite class in high school was always

art. My teacher would always have to tap me on the shoulder and get

me to pay attention to go to the next class. My little hobby is art. yeah.

That’s really unique, people have so many different interests.

There’s a lot of that on Aquidneck Island.

What is it that you like about it Aquidneck Island so much?

I was thinking about this actually the other day and I like

that there are so many secrets and hidden gems.

One of our friends Karen Chabot found a mermaid pool off the cliff walk and now

I’m gonna tell everyone about it. I am going to spoil the mermaid pool. I just love that there’s always something…

There’s a couple, I think.

There’s more than one, I’m willing to bet, but I like the secrets the hidden gems.

What has motivated you or pushed you past a struggle in your life.

I think just coming from the Midwest, we have kind of a Midwestern

sense of ethic, you know, when the tough gets going, you just, you know, you bear

down, and you push further and you just keep going. yeah.

Would you be able to name three women that have changed you whether locally or

abroad or internationally or celebrities that have made a difference in your life?

That’s a good one, that’s yeah, that’s a good one. so Ruth Bader Ginsburg has, you know, done so

much for women in shaping policy and law in our favor so she’s one woman.

I was just talking about Lizzo who is this kind of newer to the scene R & B rap artist.

She’s from Detroit Midwest like me and she’s all about being body-positive, and

embracing who you are, and showing up, being seen, so she’s someone I’ve really enjoyed.

Hey Lizzo do you think we can get her up on stage with you?

Come on Lizzo, hook a mid western girl up!

and then, you know, tomorrow we’re at CK Bradley, we were so honored to be

invited to present our book and talk about SIREN there and Suzanne Ramponi

who has done so much for our “Ready to Work Program” will also be there and so

she’s someone I really am thankful for.

Yeah, she’s really special.

Thank you so much for joining us today on La Sirena representing the SIREN Womens Coop.

Wait a minute, Wait a minute. You’re not getting out of this without knowing a little more about the woman…

People don’t need to know about me.

Yes we do and so I want to know

what’s your passion or hobby you lose time in?

Oh boy, um uh let me just say

since moving to Rhode Island I have expanded my interests and hobbies and I

have taken up so many things that I couldn’t just name one. Yeah, so I’m

surfing, I’m sailing, I’m boating, I’m painting, I’m running, I’ve done

triathlons. These are all new things since moving to Newport Rhode Island in

2005 that I never, never would have done before, I don’t think.

So you lose time in a lot of things.

I love it, I just stay busy, it’s wonderful.

Favorite part about the island?

I actually have to go back to that same concept.

Everybody here is very outdoorsy, very, I don’t use the word athletic, but

they have so many broad interests about being outside we get a very short season.

I mean in the winter people ski down my street, on Pelham Steet, I mean it’s the main thoroughfare downtown

and in the summer there’s, you know, paddleboarding and I love that about this place and

people will just say come and work out with us, come and come over here, let’s do this,

and most people have memberships too many different gyms.

that’s cool.

You can do yoga and tennis and it’s just so fun. Everybody’s very welcoming to the community.

Always keep busy. What is something that has motivated you during a time of challenge?

You know, I think that my daughter has inspired me in my entire life.

You know I’ve always wanted her to have somebody to look up to,

and know that no matter what decisions that you make, you can make a change.

You don’t have to you know succumb to either how you were raised or

whatever life that is and says she’s always pushed me to go forward and to

keep going, even in my times of melancholy, and we all have them, We are up, we are down.

So every day I wake up, I say my daughter probably would not like it if I stayed so sad.

It keeps me going every day.

She sounds like one of your three women that you admire.

I have learned a few things hanging out with you.

You know she actually is really special.

She is in a mindset that she makes happen whatever she wants.

She will dream it and it will come.

That is a really unique quality that I think a lot of people want and it’s so natural for her. Yeah.

What other women, that you know of, anywhere,

What other women inspire you?

I have to say all the women that I surround myself with

inspire me every day, just whether it’s, their motivation or

the way they communicate or the way they dress or

their sense of abilities to do certain things.

Everybody has a unique quality so I really find that very unique.

but I have to go back to Oprah

I knew you were going to say Oprah.

You know who doesn’t love Oprah?

She changed the forefront of the way we think, and the way we speak and Super Soul Sundays….

Totally!

This is almost like a Super Soul Sunday right here. We are getting to know each other.

Thanks for answering those questions, that was fun.

Thank you for forcing that out of me, unexpectedly, I appreciate that. It wasn’t

as traumatizing as I thought when you first asked it.

well thanks so much for setting this whole thing up for us.
