Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles.

I’m Christon and joining us today is Kim Fuller of Kim fuller photography.

I know you have some other things but you’re also a SIREN coop member.

I am and very excited to be.

How long have you been a member?

Wow, almost from the beginning because it hasn’t been quite a year yet

that it’s been around, but yeah I came in pretty early so I’m excited about that.

Welcome to The La Sirena Siren Cooperative Series.

Thank you.

Which is a little bit more on the personal side,

but we’d like an overview of your business,

before we get to know you a little bit better.

First of all, thank you for having me,

because I’ve been following you for a long time.

Oh , Thank you!

My business has been evolving

I’ve been a photographer for you know 30 years,

but I’m starting to use my photography along with mindfulness,

to help women really,

really see who they are.

I do everything from empowerment shoots,

branding shoots for their businesses and

trying to capture something that they feel is authentic to them.

We get away from sort of that stagnant you know coffee cup on the white bed,

kind of business shot, because that’s really not everyone, and so I’m

trying to pull out something in them that they feel attracts the kind of

clients that they want to work with, first of all. I really feel like the more

authentic we can be, the more, the more our life can feel a little freer

especially in our businesses, so I do that and then along with that, a little

mindfulness coaching, along with the photo shoots, as well as, just separately.

With all of your background and your diverseness,

What are some of the hobbies, on the side that, or activities, that inspire you or get you get lost in ?

I study Buddhism so I do a lot of reading and try to listen

to a lot of YouTube videos from various monks and teachers, so that’s a

lot of work, but I love it. I’m just kind of a nerd in the analytical side of

the life so Buddhism is my analytical…

An analytical Buddhist?

I know, imagine that? Well Buddhism is very analytical at least Tibetan Buddhism is.

There’s a lot of layers to it and so

it gets me really thinking, it gets me really thinking and then meditation along with that.

I really love just going out and hiking in the woods and and being,

being on the water as much as possible and just sitting and being.

Is that your favorite thing about Aquidneck Island?

Oh my god yes, like that hour between like

5 and 7 or 8PM, when the sun’s going down my husband and I

just get the chair out, we get our snacks and go down to the beach and it’s

like a big exhale. I just love it, that’s my favorite thing about living near the beach,

is you can just pop down there in a second.

What are some of the things in life that have made you who you are today, that have motivated you?

I would have to say my kids more than anything, my own children and they just,

this generation is so smart to me. I just think they have a lot of tools at their fingertips

and they’re using them really well.

My youngest son is adopted and he has inspired me in a different way than my other kids did,

because he came from such a tough beginning, which I did not have at all, so

I didn’t really know a lot about that kind of thing, so he’s particularly

motivated me, so much so that I wrote a book and did a TED talk.

The book is called Finding and it brings in my whole Buddhist practice and how that helped me

get through the whole adoption slash issues that my son had.

“Our son” had, I always say that, but the whole family…

Changing peoples lives, even in the household.

Would you say that there’s any three women in in the world, in your life, that have helped you become the person you are today?

Yeah you know, like you said, and I know in a previous interview that I watched,

my daughter inspires me every day. She’s so creative and she’s a go-getter.

She doesn’t let anything, like you said, like she knows,

No Fear

Very little fear and she battles a touch of anxiety,

but she’s really learned to overcome that and I’m very proud of her

for doing that and she looks for tools to do it.

She has a great role model.

Well thank you and

I really love Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez I always mess up her name Ocasio-Cortez the new U.S. Representative.

She’s the Hispanic woman who came from literally like working in a restaurant,

grassroots, and became a U.S. Representative and she is kicking butt.

and I love her because she didn’t let the fact that she came from a grassroots

organization or worked in a restaurant to stop her from making change in the world.

I really admire her.

She’s motivated.

Yeah and then I would say my grandmother because I think that she was

she was from that generation where women didn’t necessarily have careers but she

was a legal secretary and I think if it been this time, now, she would have been a lawyer for sure.

She would get dressed every day with the pin and the buttons and do the whole thing.

It was great, she was very inspiring.

If you were gonna look back at yourself, younger, what would you give yourself for advice?

Wear more bikinis!

Let it go, Let it go!

Cause something is happening with this body!

Something is happening with this body and I’m just not recognizing it

so I’m saying wear more bikinis girls ! Show what you got it!

Let’s get real

We are not getting any younger over here.

I’II love my body for what it serves me

and how its help me get my kids and the whole thing but yeah,

wear more bikinis!

High-five on that!

Well thank you so much for joining us today.

We hope to learn more about you in the near future and

we look forward to seeing you on

Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles.

I’m Christon and joining us today is Lynda West from The Nest.

Tell us a little bit about your business and

you’re a member of the SIREN Women’s Coop

How long have you been a member?

Just, maybe since December yeah December.

Fairly new, but it’s very exciting. It gets me out, gets me social.

I’ve met some really wonderful women. Happy to be apart of it.

How can the women of the Women’s Cooperative enjoy what you do?

The Nest is a center for babies on up to teens

concentrating on yoga and mindfulness.

It is like a youth program.

Yes, we have a center in Portsmouth , a beautiful studio there.

We also like to do some community outreach go to schools and

do some yoga and mindfulness there and just make ourselves a little bit more mobile.

Yeah from babies on up to teens and tweens everything in between. We’ve got

classes where parents can participate with the child or you can drop your

child off and go take a yoga class yourself at Tenth Gate and it’s really

just about making sure that the whole child is looked after so not just the

physical part of yoga but also the emotional and the mindfulness and

teaching them how to breathe at a young age, which I wish I would have learned.

De-stress, Yes, was definitely

self-regulation self-soothing, getting them getting them used to doing

that at a young age so that when they’re my age it’s just natural and it comes naturally.

Wouldn’t that be nice, because we have to tell ourselves every day every,

every second, breathe a little bit more.

Obviously Yoga is your passion. Are there are other things, activities or

things that you do that you get lost in?

I don’t have a lot of time for getting lost in things.

But my go to, are crossword puzzles.

It comes from my Grandma and Grandpa. I remember them sitting in their chairs

in the evening. They don’t watch a lot of TV and they were just crossworders, crossworders.

It’s just something I go to, it’s relaxing for me.

I hadn’t thought about that, just takes your mind off things.

Yeah, it does. Yeah, no TV, no phone, no nothing.

and I can just crossword anywhere, it’s very relaxing.

Are you from Aquidneck Island?

No no I was born in the Bronx

but moved to Fort Lauderdale when I was 2. I grew up in Fort Lauderdale.

What brought you to a Aquidneck island,

Whats your favorite thing?

A man ! I followed him

That is a story of many.

My husband grew up here he grew up in Portsmouth

We moved almost 20 years ago.

I’ve been here a long time. Raised the family here.

How many children do you have?

I have four. They’re older, college, high school and middle school.

What are the things that keep you motivated every day or

something a trivial thing that happened in your past that maybe changed your life?

I don’t know when this happened exactly but I remember realizing what I

wanted to do and that changed everything.

It was very empowering and it just sort of changed my outlook on everything.

It changed the way that I was raising my daughter’s and it

changed the way I made business decisions, so that was extremely

empowering. Just really, this is what I want to do, this is what I love, let’s do it.

And let’s do it !

Did any three women in the world have an impact?

It’s so hard to pick three! I have to give a shout out and this is

and this is gonna be like 300 women

to women who are doing what they love

That’s you!

and being creative and

and saying, you know what

this might work for a little while, it might not work at all,

it might be a great success, but I know that this is what I’m good at

and where my service to others lies and I’m just gonna go for it.

Like you ! Right ?

so here we are!

You have a talent and you want to share it

and that to me is… those are my women.

well I’m glad to be grouped in there.

If you were gonna go back ten years and tell yourself something

that would help change your life today.

Let’s see, so… 42 year old me, I would probably tell her

just get over the fear.

You know when you’re 42, you’re sort of running from it,

We don’t want to be uncomfortable, I don’t want be uncomfortable.

I don’t want to be afraid.

Fear of failure.

Yeah, so now, it’s just like,

I really don’t care. It might fail, it might not, it might be a great success,

Just to don’t worry about the fear.

It’s all part of it

and usually if it’s scary, it’s something really good to go after.

That is a great point,

Thank you for making that and

Thank you for joining us today on La Serena

Yeah, thank you !

and you can contact the SIREN’s Women’s Cooperative and

You can find your contact information there. www.SIRENcooperative.com

Perfect, well thank you.

Thank you

Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles

I’m Christon and joining me today is

Katie Annulli from KMA Organizing. Welcome.

Thank you

Also SIREN Women’s Cooperative member.

Yep

Welcome to La Sirena

Thank you, I appreciate it.

We are doing a series of boat interviews where we get to know some of the

SIREN members businesses and a little bit more on a personal level.

How exciting, tell us about your business.

I am a professional organizer. I have a residential side of my business as well as I work with small businesses.

I help people to organize their homes from kitchens, closets,

basements , garages, I help people with moves, purging and packing for a move

as well as unpacking and setting up their house when they get to their new place.

Then on the small business side I do bookkeeping, data based organizing,

digital files, processes, productivity, kind of just getting the business flowing

so that they’re in a good place and can run it more smoothly.

What about a home office?

Yeah , I definitely organize home offices too

You need a space where you feel comfortable going in to do your taxes, right?

Definitely, Yes

Thanks for sharing that with us

How can they find you?

My website is KMAOrganizing.com

I also have a Facebook as well as Instagram and they’re both

@KMAorganizing

Did this startup is a hobby or passion for you

or do you have other things that you get lost in ?

I do get very lost in organizing. I find it very fun and I often lose time with my clients.

Another hobby that I really do like lose time in is sewing.

I started to sew earlier this year and I really enjoy being able to make something. .

It’s a very detail-oriented hobby so I like it, it fits my personality.

You get sucked into it, Wow, well I have some dress ideas, maybe we can….

I don’t know if I am there yet.

Okay, so when did you move to Aquidneck Island?

I actually live in Warren but I’ve lived in Rhode Island for about a year and a half.

What is it that you like about Aquidneck Island?

I love the landscape, I moved to Rhode Island to be closer to the ocean

and I get to see the ocean every single day so I love that.

It is really beautiful, is it not

What is something that motivated you or pushed you out of your comfort zone?

I would say yoga. I’m a big yogee and and yoga has changed my life.

I’ve been practicing for about 10 years and it has taught me a lot of patience and

perseverance and through my breath, I’ve been able to get through a

lot of challenging situations off the mat.

I want to ask you so many more questions.

We SIREN’s have set a protocol with very SIRENista questions.

Did any women in the world help inspire you to become the person that you are today?

Yes, definitely, I have… it’s hard to think about just three women,

because there are a lot of people that really do inspire me.

I would say my mom first of all,

Yes, They always do, Its almost like an inside unspoken rule.

She did instill a love for order and organization in me.

She also is just so unselfishly loving and supportive and it’s really inspiring.

I’d say someone else Christa Ripa

who’s one of my clients, she’s a virtual client of mine. She has a branding and

marketing company in San Francisco and she has really taught me a lot about

building a business based on something that you’re passionate about and making

something you’re passionate about into a successful business.

Also balancing self-care and having fun as well as running a business so

she’s been very helpful to me.

Work hard , play Hard.

Then I’ll say Michelle Obama as my last one.

What about Michelle Obama?

She’s had a different upbringing than a lot of people and she’s been very

successful in our country obviously and supporting of President Obama.

Yeah, Definitely , did you read the book?

I did

It was really enlightening.

If you were going to go back in time and give yourself a nugget of advice when you were younger, what would it be?

I would say have more confidence in yourself and your ideas and

you can achieve what you put your mind to.

I love that. Thanks so much for joining us

Thank you

on La Sirena today and telling us your SIRE story.

Thank you for having me.

We will have to have you back in the near future and we look forward to seeing you on

Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles I’m Christon and we are here for the

second year in a row with Nancy Piffard from the Newport International Boat Show. Welcome

I know, it is our second year working together, thank you.

Give us the overview of the Boat Show and if there’s anything special and new this year.

Let’s see it’s our 49th year, so that’s pretty special, since next year is our 50th and

we are chock-full of new boats, power and sail, and you know

everything from cruisers to inflatable dinghies so we have everything you can

imagine, on the site, we open on September 12 and run through the 15th and come on down.

How many people usually attend the show?

I’s about 40,000 people that come in over the four days and that includes, you know, the exhibitors

who are coming from 20 countries are represented, and they bring all their

staff too, so when you add it all up it’s easily over 40,000.

That’s great, now that could be a problem for parking, but you guys have that all taken care of.

I mean it’s a great economic boost to the city of Newport and the State during that time.

We have a parking program at Easton’s Beach which is only

a mile and a half away and with your parking space which is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

you have free shuttle service right to the show site and back so that

really works well for people. To Park is $25 a day.

How much are tickets? so when they get there do they need of pre-purchase can they purchase onsight?

You can either you can do either pre purchasing is a convenience and there is

a bit of a little discount if you order in advance or you can just come right to

the gates, there’s a seven gates, 4 places selling tickets and they’re $22

day of, and they are $17 if you order in advance.

That’s great for whole families to come and spend the whole day, the whole weekend.

Yes and children under 12 are free any day of the show.

What kind of venues to do you have for the children to eat?

We have Wally’s hot dogs this year,

That’ll be great for kids and we have Pranzi’s Catering, we have

Flat Waves with tacos, so there’s a lot on sight. Not to mention we are

right in the heart of downtown and there’s restaurants on our site.

What are some of the show highlights this year?

I think we’re gonna be, hopefully doing a Facebook Live every morning, and

just kind of saying what’s going to be happening at the show that day

but if you can give us any secret behind the scenes tips.

Every day we have seminars that,

with a show wrist band they’re free, and we have Pam Wall who’s joining us from Florida.

She’s a world-renowned lifestyle cruising lifestyle expert and

she will be having seminars at the Seaman’s Church Library on everything

from cool products no one knows about to hurricane preparation import.

Her registrations are unbelievable right now so she’s very…

she has a following actually , she is great.

We have the “At The Helm – Confident Captain’s” at the helm

program and

I might sign up that! We just got a new Hinckley Picnic boat so

Perfect! so you could learn how to dock. There’s everything from

docking skills or learning how to sail or learning how to power boat and you can

register right at the show or in advance online and you’ll go out with a

experienced captain right out into the harbor.

It’s not just boats, I mean you can go and look for boats, all kinds of boats, but you can also go shopping.

Absolutely! I mean it’s a lifestyle and so you know you have

foul weather gear, you have nautical jewelry, you have fabric cushions for

your boat, if you already have one.

Anything nautical ! Anything boat related.

And all the toys that go with it!

Paddle boards and kayaks

Or if you need a new engine.

Or if you need a new engine, exactly!

There’s lots of those.

If you want to know about some of the specials that are happening at the show,

and any raffles that some of the booths are offering,

you can download the Buki app.

Yes,

You guys have partnered with LetsBuki.com

Yes!

That’s really fabulous.

It is and we’re really happy to have Buki on board and you can

you can prepare and plan for your visit to the show.

So you can know exactly where you want to go ahead of time, so that’s really great.

There’s wonderful sponsors

We will be doing samplings and we even have

an airplane that’s landing in the harbor.

WHAT?

pretty sure…

oh maybe we could work something out where I land with the airplane….

Thank you so much for the overview of the show. It’s going to be very exciting.

Thank you

There will be lots of people here and we look forward to seeing you on

Kevin Hegerty from 12 Meter Charters

who’s offering $100 gift certificate and a bottle of bubbly

That’s one ride, right?

One sail on one of the 12 meters in Newport.

Tell us a little bit about 12 Meters,

Where you’re located and your boats.

We’re down on Bowens Wharf. 12 Bowens Wharf

and we have a couple of America’s Cup boats. Colombia and Heritage.

whoever wins this will enjoy a fun sail on hopefully Columbia with me.

Have you ever been on one of the charters?

Yeah I have, actually that’s where I met Kevin years ago .

Certainly one of the best charters in Newport

when you want to get out for an afternoon or an evening.

Have you taken photos of the boats or with the boats?

Yeah they are also some of the most beautiful boats in the harbor for sure.

Certainly these old boats have the graceful lines that new boats just can’t quite match.

Yes, for sure, definitely had some of the most beautiful photos of Columbia.

I am looking around his gallery right now.

So if you want to see some pretty pictures of Columbia come in the gallery.

Do you have any crazy fun stories about your charters that you can actually say out loud?

We meet all types of people. We are on the water every day, we meet people from all walks of life.

When they get on the water it’s a great experience for them.

I have to say he’s been really super busy so it was really hard to put him down.

so we’re really happy to have 12 meters a part of our show today.

Thank you for having us.

Where can people find you on the website? Do they need to buy tickets in advance?

The website is 12MeterCharters.com

or you can come down, we have a little kiosk downtown.

You can buy a ticket there for a fun sail.

We do a lot of corporate events and team-building. We don’t just race on the boat.

We actually just won the 12 Meter World Championships.

Hurray! Congratulations!

Thank you!

That’s so exciting!

yeah I was a pretty extraordinary event.

How many 12 meters were there?

The biggest gathering of 12 meters ever in the US, there were 22

12 meters from all over the world.

Yeah and this was a really busy summer for all of sailing in Newport.

You can see one of the s-class photos behind us here.

We also had the s-class 100th anniversary here in Newport this summer,

which is actually what my new book is about, which my father wrote and I did the photography for.

The S-class was the Herreshoff S class was designed and built up in Bristol RI, Just near by here.

The boats were originally designed in 1919, there were

about a hundred boats built and roughly half of them still exist. We had

21 boats on the bay racing here. There were a few others that are in racing

condition but weren’t able to make it, but still it was extraordinary having so

many of these old boats still racing so competitively, you know, we talked about

racing, well certainly, you can see in the picture behind us that they are tight and still very competitive.

You really have amazing photos, how did you get started in the photography world.

I started in photography back in school.

I was always into out-door adventures and

wanted to be able to show the gorgeous scenery with all my friends and family, when I would come back.

I grew up sailing, so certainly I blame my parents for that aspect of it.

It’s nice to blame your parents for everything, you know, even our personal shortcomings.

Yeah and I’ve just taken it from there.

yeah that’s great

I just saw recently on Facebook that you’re with some really

extraordinary people including Annie Leibovitz.

It was quite an extraordinary event, Greta Thunberg, who is an environmental activist from Sweden was

coming across the Atlantic with Team Milizia which is IMOCA 60 ocean racing team.

They brought her and they sailed her across the Atlantic because

she didn’t want to have the environmental impact of flying in an airplane.

You know, of course, that is also a great media for sailing and promotion of sailing

having her come on this boat. Quantum Sails also sponsored this team and they just

arrived. With the wind of course, you never know when the transatlantic

crossing boat sail boat is going to arrive and they came in late Tuesday

into New York and it was pretty extraordinary to see her and all the

fanfare in New York Harbor, even even despite that lousy weather and then

Annie Leibovitz was out there making a portrait of her as well, so we

got to hang out with her in the morning and it was it was quite a special day.

Where can people find your artwork?

My website CorySilken.com

You can also look for @silkenphotography on Facebook and at @silkenphoto on Istagram.

It’s really fantastic, so you mostly focus in the sailing community?

Mostly yachts, although I do shoot some portraits and some interiors as well.

My work with a number of regatta sponsors and shipyards and private yacht owners and

do some book projects and of course fine art as well around yachting and local scenery.

Cory’s chosen five photos or eight photos? How many photos did you choose today?

We have 8 photos from the Newport Living and Lifestyles photo contest.

We’re gonna take a look at them and hopefully

you’ve chosen the winner so stay tuned to the end and find out who the big winner is!

This first one is a neat shot from @Kara_Ann322

It’s a photograph of the reflection of the bridge at sunset or sunrise and some sunglasses on the beach.

The bridge is very popular, yeah wow, I love the colors in this, almost opalescent, iridescent, fairyland like.

What do you like about it?

I just like the picture.

I just like it.

I like it a lot.

And that’s how you should view photography,

if it’s something that you like, there’s there’s no more rationale needed.

If you like it, you like it, and that’s good enough, that is certainly a lot of my

customers here in the gallery. Something that when you connect with it , that’s that’s all you need to know.

She had 131 likes on this, so that’s great, good job.

Yeah and the next one is from @AnnM816 which is a photograph of bird.

It’s a hummingbird.

A hummingbird, yes.

Gorgeous colors.

Wow, that’s beautiful.

wow it’s so just clear.

Yeah it’s a very crisp image and very very nice with the

pink against the green background. There must have been some other trees

or bushes behind it. Yeah it’s very pretty.

and it’s hard to choose and narrow it down to 10, We have some really great local photographers and

just people with even with their iPhones, so this is, this is not an easy feat,

that’s why I bring in the judge photographers.

Yes and the next one that we have here is from @TimNewportRI and

it’s photograph of Newport Harbor with

some of the rocks in the foreground and it’s a really pretty shot.

Yeah gorgeous the reflection I just love the way the ocean here really picks up on pinks and

The pastels in the clouds and just the curve of the cloud

in the sky really brings your eye into the image very nicely.

I like it.

He likes it, “Mikey Likes It”

The next one is from @JMich78photography which is a

photograph of some poppies in a field with some cloudy sky in the background.

It’s really nice. I think the color of the sky, the kind of blue gray, as it goes

against the bright yellow of the flowers, sunflowers.

It’s a really nice contrast and I’ve seen a lot of these ominous clouds here a lot lately.

Do you like it?

Of course I like it.

Sunflowers are so cool

It’s going to b the ongoing theme of every picture now.

It is.

Alright and and the next one is from @SailOnHopeSan and of course it wouldn’t be very

good if we didn’t have any pictures of boats in here. This is a great

picture of a boat in the fog, with I’m assuming, that’s the sun trying to break

through the background, which is a scene we’ve seen all too often this summer in Newport.

Right Fog.

and you know they won laughs last month too!

Oh did they? okay

Oh yeah! Patrick and Monica, they charter “Hope San”, their sailboat.

They always get really great photos out on the water.

Here we have one from @l_Double

I really like his work a lot.

Reaching into the sun of the road.

Lee Abney has really fantastic stuff you can always, always know when it’s his picture. It’s really unique.

Yeah, you’ll have to check some of his stuff out. Nice work Lee.

230 Likes, that is a lot! Good job

The next one is from @DMN-images

It’s kind of a neat shot at the beach with

some glow sticks I guess.

Do we have rave parties here that I’m not aware of?

Right?

Are you guys going to the rave parties?

Ya know, at 4AM you never know what’s gonna happen.

That’s true.

I don’t think that one was quite a 4AM

A neat shot nonetheless,

Nice creativity in this bunch of images.

Then this next one which is which is my favorite.

Oh could this possibly be the winner? this is it?

This is the winner! drum roll….

@Anastasia_M_Arnold

Anastasia!

It’s a shot at the beach, with the lifeguard tower and a surfboard and a

group of presumably either surfers or lifeguards more likey.

It’s framed really nicely. It’s got a nice mood to it and just nice muted

color for the scene which works really well with it.

Makes it pop.

A little bit misty on the water.

I love what she says here. What does she say

Stand 5 is my hangout place. I’ve

never enjoyed the beach as much this summer as before, so peaceful.

Congratulations Anastasia Arnold.
