Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles, I’m Christon and joining us today is
Bryan Rafanelli from and author of “A Great Party” and he’s a celebrity event
planner and I would like you to just randomly open a page in this book and
tell us a quick story about one of these fabulous party’s.

Alright ! This is a polo barn
right in Aspen Colorado and what’s amazing about this is
that you could actually literally eat off the floor in this polo barn, it’s so
spectacular, but it had this amazing metal armature that shot across it , so
you know it was screaming for 10,000 Bogan via hanging from it, and so
that’s actually what we did. This is a wedding with 450 people. This is an enormous
stage with a 50-piece Orchestra all in white jacket, it was stunning, and it was
black-tie too and so when you were outside it was like this giant horse
barn so we wanted to make sure that when you stepped in you felt like you were at
a beautiful glamorous black-tie affair.
Tell us a little bit about your book tour.
Well, where do I begin? Actually to me it’s like one long party, so I
literally get to go across the country, and what’s been so amazing is people
like you and people like Candy have been throwing these beautiful lunches and
cocktail parties that turn into parties so it’s not just about sitting there
signing books, it’s about storytelling, because that’s what this book is really
all about, but also we’ve had some good times, you know we’ve had confetti
cannons and DJs and and that’s the idea.
He is adding me to the guest list as we speak. Gentlemen!
Lot’s of champagne….
That’s what this tour is all about,
so I’m very excited and and we’ve been going up and down the east coast
and we’re going to Palm Beach, and Houston, and Dallas we’re going out to
the west coast. I was just in London. It’s been fun, we’re not fooling around

Would you like to tell us something about what the winners will receive and what you do.
Absolutely, I’m a licensed massage therapist and health coach and I
work with people. I specialize in helping people have less pain in their
body, chronic pain, acute pain, I work with people who are in rehab programs, people
who just want to feel better in their body and I’m

I practice deep tissue, myofascial release, just simple relaxation, Swedish massage,
I also incorporate marma point therapy, which comes from Ayurveda

I’m the only one that has that name.
Well I love your name and this is a beautiful space to work in with a piano and gongs, really gorgeous space.
It’s a really special space. Stella Mare is also used as a rental space for micro weddings, corporate parties, private
parties and any of that jazz. It is a gorgeous place to hold events.
Yes, I teach yoga here. The owner of this
space is super passionate about holistic health and wellness and she invites any
of that to be part of the space when it’s not being rented out for events so
We are actually home to Newport Kundalini , which is a type of yoga.
It’s a really big community here.
Every Tuesday night there’s a class at 6:00PM Kundalini Yoga and
on Tuesday mornings I teach a regular Hatha alignment based flow and
I also do private yoga, small group yoga and just teaching people how to move their bodies in general.
My whole background is in exercise science and psychology originally.
I used to be a personal trainer so I’ve been studying the body
and the workings of the mind and the body for probably 15 years.
How did you guys meet?
Through my husband and her boyfriend.
I was dying one day. I was having horrible, horrible back pains and her boyfriend who works with my husband,
said you have to go see Meagan, she is life changing and she fixed me.
I’m honored to be a part of anybody’s healing process and thank you very much.
Vessi tell us about your photography, your history, how you got started, your passions.
I am new to Newport. I moved here from Colorado in May.
I started photographing when I was 14 years old in high school.
I did it as a second major in college and then once I graduated college.
I decided that photography was going to be my side hustle.
About 3 – 3 1/2 years ago it turned into my full-time job.
I’ve been doing it ever since.
I’ve had a lot of clients in Colorado that I’ve worked with.
I primarily work with interior designers on interior design photography.
I do a lot of lifestyle shoots with people and products.
That is what my main focus is, however I’m open to new ventures in photography,
which is really really cool.
Then I also do some graphic design work as well, because my other major,
because I couldn’t just be an art major, according to my parents, was advertising.
I do all of that stuff as well.
Some clients use me as kind of a little more of a full-service, small boutique-y agency,
others just come to me for a la cart services
It just depends on what people need.

What a beautiful and gorgeous day we have here.
This is perfect boat show weather today. We are thrilled, the docks are full.
This gonna be a great great weekend for us.
Tell us a little bit about you, where are you from?
Sure, I’m from Marblehead Massachusetts
I grew up in Maine, near where these beautiful boats were built and
I work with Boston Yacht Sales here out of Weymouth as well as Falmouth and the Marblehead office.
How’d you even get into the industry ?
You know it’s a second life for me. It’s something I’m really passionate about.
I’ve been with them for five years now. It was a funny story actually.
I was looking for my next boat. I knew it was gonna be a Sabre or a Back Cove.
I started working with them and loved the brands, love the people and it’s a family business.
That worked out perfectly, timing was great for me and been with them ever since.
Where do you sell? What’s your basic geographical area?
My geographical area is New England primarily. We work with Sabre in Back Cove in Massachusetts and in Rhode Island.
The boats are built up in Maine, so we have a lot of clients up in that area as well.
What attracted you specifically to Boston Yacht Sale’s?
It’s the people. This industry is a small industry but it’s all about relationships and the people.
We are really fortunate to have people that have been working in this industry for over 50 years and really care about their clients.
So, so far in five years what’s your most sentimental testimonial?
You know it’s really interesting we get so many families on these boats,
they are really couples and multi-generational boats.
That it’s not one particular instance but it’s the time that these boats allow families and
multi generations to have together on the water.
If I’m out off Stellwagen watching the whales and all of a sudden two other boats pull up and
they’re my clients and I see them with their families out there, that’s what
gets me really excited and about what we do.
And whales !

That’s a good secondary plus.
Well , that’s the great thing about these boats, they have lots of range, people can take them up
and down the coast, they can go to Florida on them for the winter
What are some unique things about these particular boats that most people love?
Sure, so Sabre and Back Cove are sister companies. They’re down east traditional
Maine style boats, really set up for comfort and cruising, but also very
functional for day use. We have couples that can live on them for months
at a time and other families that just use them as a day boat .
I have got to see these closets!
We’ve got room for everything! Wardrobe after wardrobe.
They’re classic in style,
Yes, really nice lines, they’re classic, they’re clean.
Classic Maine built boats.
I love this leather interior that you guys have on this one.
I love the trim, the classic cherry interior so it’s a very yacht feeling,
but a very traditional yacht feeling but within a modern propulsion package and modern technologies.
What kind of engines are you guys working with?
The Sabres all come with either Volvo Penta IPS drives or Cummins Zeus drives, which are pod driven boats.
These are twin Diesel’s. The pods allow for joystick functionality.
I love the joystick
It makes around the dock, it makes everybody look like a superstar!
Even I can use the joystick to dock
Especially, grand kids and kids get on the boat,
If they’ve been playing video games all their life, this is child’s play for them.
Oh perfect
Then the sister company, Back Cove, is a little bit more of a traditional economical kind of lobster boat functionality,
where they are all single engine outboard boats.
What’s your hottest selling product?
The hottest selling product right now for Sabre is the one we’re standing on right now.
The 45, which is a new model about 18 months ago. Really popular twin cabin design and
then for Back Cove they introduced at this show last year, we introduced the 34o ,
which is the first outboard version of Back Cove.
We can’t keep those in stock.

People can custom design these boats, I imagine.
Within a platform, yes, there’s a long options sheets, custom build them.
We often have them in stock too
See there guys, where else would you want to go?
That’s right
Can you give us any insight scoop to what may be coming and for next year 2020?
Yeah, we’re really excited about next year, for both brands.
Sabre is coming out with a new 58.
Actually, that hull number one is just about complete.
We’re hoping to see that this winter.
That’s been so popular that we’ve sold the first 13 or 14 just off the drawings.
Beautiful three cabin three stateroom boat.
Then Back Cove just yesterday here at the show announced
their second outboard boat which will be a 39-foot, 39o, 39-foot two cabin boat.
Since you have new product all the time, you must have a great celebrity clientele.
We do, If I told you, I would have to kill ya, right?
Yeah right! Just throw me overboard!
If you keep your eye out on the water you’ll notice enough out there,
we try to respect their privacy.
Do they have special celebrity flags, like a burgee, on the front?
They try to be incognito out there as well, that’s their family time as well.
That’s a great opportunity for them to get away from the hustle and bustle.
I’d like to ask, Do you have a signature dance move?
I know your kids will be able to tell all, but they’re not here today.
yeah, they would kill me.

Hi ladies
Hello!
How exciting! How many times have you guys been to the show?
This was actually our second show, so we’re still newbies
How many shows do you guys go to throughout the year?
We do several different kinds of shows,
We do boat shows because of our blankets really and the waterproof nature that all of the products have
but we also do New York Now shows and AtlantasMart
those types of shows, so it’s like buyers Mart’s. Things like that, yeah
Sheila, tell us a little bit about what we’re looking at here. What is your product?
We started out with our signature flagship blanket which is over here to the right and sitting behind me and they’re
all made out of the luxurious faux fur that’s super soft but what makes this
really unique is that we are the ultimate nautical blanket because we are waterproof windproof.

Yeah it’s a nice unique combination. The blanket was really developed so that you could wrap yourself in the fur so
it’s like beauty on the inside and then you’ve got a backing that’s completely
waterproof and windproof so you can put it on like a wet boat seat or on the
ground and they come in this beautiful waterproof duffel so they’re easy to store.
I don’t want to hide this pink one back here.
That’s the baby.
That is so adorable.
They’re amazing and you know one thing to mention which I know all boaters love
is all the blankets can be embroidered with your boat names which is fun.

Where do you make your product?
We are in Albany New York upstate.
Yeah so not far.
And you guys ship
We ship all over the world.
Which one is your hottest market?
U.S. , we are also branching out the Netherlands, we have a distributor in the Netherlands and also in South Korea.
That’s unique.
That’s for the pet market.
What kind of pet products do you carry?
We have a pet blanket that has the same backing on it so people when they’re outside or in
their cars they use the blankets even in their house. My dog loves them, they’re amazing.
I was gonna ask you guys if you had any celebrity story’s.
Yeah, we do! On our first show that we did in New York Now,
that was February of 2018, we met Oprah’s team which is Rae Ann Herman and
Adam Glassman, who we’ve since become friends with and they just loved our
blankets, at the time that’s all we had, and we knew that we were going to be a
serious contender for Oprah’s Favorite Things, and then it was this time last
year that we found out that we were picked.
What is your hottest selling item?
The caplet right now,
everyday we’re selling so so many, but what’s interesting is, we just introduced two
new products, one of them I’m wearing, this is the pretty puffer.
Again, it’s a completely waterproof shell, actually it’s our first non fur item,
which is interesting, and then the other one is the reversible bomber so this
bomber is a faux mink, it’s our signature mink on one side and then when you
reverse it, it’s a waterproof satin material so Pretty Rugged is really known
for their innovative materials that they use, that we use, and we create as a
company and so with the bomber when you reverse it, it really is two garments in
one and the price point is amazing.
oh it is sooo soft.
The snow leopard is our number one color.
It is luxurious.
No sleeves, it’s hands-free. It’s got a front slip pockets.
Do I look thin?
Yes you do! Actually, do I?
It is very comfortable, you can dress it up, dress it down.
You can put your initial right on the pocket.
It’s kind of like a spin on the fur coat
You can carry your phone in your pocket.
It’s a waterproof pocket.
What are your color schemes?
Our blankets come in seven colors.
The bombers are in two, which is navy and white.
The caplets are in five colors.
We’ve got the leopard, there’s white, there’s navy, there’s black, there’s chocolate.
There’s different color waves for each product.
We’ll be adding new colors, we’re gonna do this caplet in red.
The bomber will come in a leopard as well as the navy.
We’re adding colors all the time.
You guys have retail centers or do you sell out of stores how can people find your products?

and then we’re at shows, we’re in many stores. We are probably in about 200
boutiques across the country. You can find us in a lot of places.
You guys are a lot of boat shows hosting your wares. What is your favorite boat?
My favorite boat in the whole wide world?
In the whole wide world!
if I had to pick my favorite boat in the whole wide world,
it would have to be a Hinckley.
Any particular Hinckley?
I love the picnic boats, that’s the one that I would choose.
We have a Hacker Craft, which I also love, and they’re beautiful but there’s something about a Hinkley boat
and I think Pretty Rugged should be on every Hinckley boat in the world.
Well, you just might be in luck today! We happen to have a Hinckley Picnic Boat ! That would be so fun!!!
Oh my gosh, we do need to get on there and photograph the blankets, so fun.
I love the Hinckley’s. There’s something about them.
They’re beautiful, but down-to-earth and gorgeous. I just I just think they’re so amazing.
Sheila?
I’m not really a sailor so I would love to have a sailboat someday and learn how to sail.
I grew up on motor boats, Chris Crafts and my dad has a Hacker Craft, too.
They are just beautiful, but there is something about sailing that is so mysterious to that I kind of want to learn how to do it.
I couldn’t get to the other end of the tent, so I don’t know how I would actually read a compass!
Which is an interesting thing to say
since our heritage is really built around my great-great-grandfather who

Yes I’m Tracy Slocum, yeah so that’s a really important part of the company and who we are.
In his trepidation, and his adventure and and the things that he did in his life and the chances that he took.
It’s just an amazing story if you’ve never read his book, you should.
It’s called, Sailing Alone Around the World, and
It was a best-seller.
It’s still in print and anyone who sails knows who he is.
Do you guys have a specific slogan that you refer to?
The slogan for the company is “Transforming Your Outdoor Experience”
and really that’s what the products are all about.
It’s about making the times that you spend outside even better.
Whether it’s the caplet or the puffer, that just improves those times because
you’re warm and you’re dry and it’s luxurious and you look great!
How long have you guys been in business together?
Just under two years

I started sourcing way before this became a company.
I was making the blankets for myself
It wasn’t even about being in business.
My husband’s a third-generation clothing manufacturer,
so he was very helpful with helping me source products and and fabrics

I opened it a
Little over five years ago now, so I grew up in the area, kind of had a dream to always own my own restaurant. Ran
Businesses, I ran restaurants around here for a long time and then just really decided to go for it.
So I opened Caleb and Broad, May 20th, 2014 and just kind of hit the ground running from there.
There you’ve done a lot to the place. I always try and update everything, change everything,
We got some big things coming in this next winter
I plan on
revamping the whole restaurant a little bit. Kind of bringing a different style again and just kind of freshen things up around here.
You heard it first here. Exactly… actually, very true
Well, you know I’m new to the area so I just moved up here myself from New York
So maybe you can tell me a little bit about what kind of food you guys have.
So I like to describe it as funky and fun. A step up from bar food and a step down from fine dining.
I hover around $20 or less for every entree. Actually, you can come in on a Monday night, which is our big deal
We win it every year. It’s our best dining deals in Newport. It’s every entrees $10
It’s the same portion that you get every other night. It gives you kind of a low cost,
low risk reward to come in try us our and check out other things on the menu, that you might not have
tried because you are a little scared. so what’s the beer situation like? The beer situation,
It’s we got a lot of locals on draft. We actually just did a did a deal with Foolproof
They make our own beer right now. It’s Caleb’s brew. So it’s an amber ale with a little saffron zest in blood orange twist to it as well.
Well you are packed and you said on Tuesday night you have a… yeah, we do a deal on Tuesdays
All the wines half price as long as you order an entree. So a bottle of Veuve right now would cost you
$45 which you can’t even get that in a liquor store for, so, you know
dinner entree and a nice bottle of wine, you can save some money
Come try it out. I was here on Monday. It was fabulous is packed. So get here early
Definitely on Monday’s unless you do have some patience
We do fill up around 6 o’clock, and we keep rolling right until 10 o’clock when the kitchen closes.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you chose the top five or six photos
well, I came up here from New York three months ago, was a photographer and ran a photo studio down there and
Came up to Newport a couple times for vacation and just loved it so much. I couldn’t leave so I stayed.
Well, I don’t blame, that’s what happened to me too. The thing that’s great about
Newport, you know, your blog is a perfect testament to that too – is that the lifestyle,
environment, the culture, the art scene, the food scene,
Just the way everything looks you could be in a vineyard one minute you on the beach another minute later
It’s just for a photographer. It’s great. Yeah hiking, camping, fishing, bird sanctuary fishing, boating the whole thing,
It’s just a lot of culture, a lot of different experiences in one small place, which is amazing. There’s nothing like it.
What were you doing in New York?
I ran a big photo studio in New York. We had tons of clients a lot of cars. We did a lot of car photography.
We did everything from dog food to cosmetics.
We even had Victoria Secrets as one of our clients, so that was a lot of fun.

this piece really caught me four color and composition and
the main thing that I look at when I look at a photograph is what kind of story is it telling
if you’re a lifestyle photographer or any kind of a photographer you want to tell a picture take a picture that’s gonna
Keep telling the story over a period of time not just something you want to look at and turn the page
This photo tells a wonderful story
Obviously, it’s the photographer’s hand is reaching out down along
Towards the Sun rising in the distance or possibly setting so there’s a little bit of a question there
and it’s it’s very
Moody it’s moody. It’s mystical. It’s it creates a lot of different thoughts in your mind
So it’s engaging and it makes you think so. That’s one of the reasons why I love that
How many likes did he have on that? That is an exceptional amount of likes.

This one’s from Kara_Ann322, Kara_Ann322
This is a really cool shot. She’s got a hundred and thirteen likes this is a weather shot
And you can sort of see this little path going off into the distance with you know
Really ominous looking clouds a little bit of bright sky there on the horizon and it’s rain in the distance. This is also exceptional
composition too- she’s really balanced the frame really
well, you’ve got you know sort of light in the lower left corner dark in the upper right hand corner
then sort of the opposite thing going on with
light in the upper left hand corner and dark in the lower right hand corner and then this path
Kind of bisecting the frame going out to the horizon. It’s it’s beautiful photograph beautiful color

I love her term here, September stormin its way in.
Yeah, it looks like the day is about to be ruined, real quick
Get off the beach! Its a great photo, now I’m a boater and a sailor
So this one really resonated with me in particular. This is a great shot by
SailonHopeSan and yes, Patrick and Monika they charter they’re sail boat out.
Yeah, this is a beautiful shot, beautiful color,
And again, very very strong in composition and also tells a really really wonderful story, what you see here is you know
Nice use of her horizon line. You don’t want to cut the photo off right smack in the middle
So they kept the horizon a little low
Beautiful angles here too, which is great
You’ve got the boom of the sailboat coming down forming a really nice triangle with the hull of the sailboat
And then you’ve got this open triangle of water here accented by another sailboat
That’s just catching the sunlight as its reflecting off the water. It’s really really amazing composition lots of triangles in this piece
I’m a big triangle fan
So I really like this.
Good to know, good to know your a triangle guy. I am
That’s also a key to taking good photos too
If you can put triangles in your pictures, they’re gonna look a lot stronger and a lot more stable
I didn’t know that. Yeah
Do you sail?
I do when I can, I used to race on a boat called White Rhino. It was a lot of fun. They used to take me down around to the Carribean
and sail around here.

So now let’s jump over to the next photograph. This one is I really really like a lot. This is ElyseMariePhotographyRI
she has a few likes on this picture, but I think it deserves a little bit more attention than
than it got, its it’s a beautiful image. It’s black and white again. It tells an amazing story
There’s a little bit of a triangle here with the girl with her arms out and her dress
And again you sort of have that
You know nice strong triangle shape going on with the top of her head in the corners of the frame
Again makes a very very stable picture. What’s also fun about it too is that there’s a tilted angle
So the tilted angle makes it fun and makes it a little bit more
a little bit more naturalistic
Do you need to get that?
Naw, its okay
All right. Do you want to want to start again with this one? No no. So this is Dancing into the Weekend.
She is really fun, I love it.
Its just so full of life. It’s beautiful shot at the Norman bird sanctuary too, which is a beautiful place. I’d love to go there
Now this this one is also great too. I mean, there’s so many nice pictures
It’s really hard to come up with the winner. This one is is really really great. This is by
Kay.Spies
Also has a few likes, but I think it deserves more
Generally speaking. I am not a big fan of… (answering machine kicking in)

First Beach great place to take pictures the Sun is awesome there first thing in the morning
The Sun is also awesome there at the end of the day
You also have this long beautiful shallow beach with very little wave action. So you get beautiful reflections of the sky and the Sun
This is a great shot. I don’t own a dog, but I consider myself kind of a dog person. I love dogs
This is a great shot because you can see the leash
That the owner is holding
And the dogs are out there sniffing around again. It tells an amazing story because
You you can look at this
Picture and kind of lose yourself in the mood and feel exactly what it was like to be there at the time
That’s key to a good photograph
Does the photo put the viewer in the place of where the photographer took the picture? And in this case it absolutely does
and she it her Fur-child
I just love that.
And while I’m on the subject – I’m gonna hit you guys up with triangles again, also there’s another triangle there
You can see it nice strong triangle, that way another triangle going the other way,
So the dog is not smack in the middle of the photo
Also super key you do not want to put your subject in the dead center of a photo, always a little bit off a little to the right,
to the left, a little above, a little below
There we go, We are perfect now, a triangle
There we go, so anyway, so yeah, so there it is and I mean it was really really tough to pick a winner
But when it comes right down to it
I am definitely going with ElyseMariePhotographyRI and this this beautiful picture dancing into the weekend
I mean it’s it’s you could blow this thing up to six feet by four feet and hang it on the wall
and look at it all day, it’s an amazing photograph
There is not much room here, but maybe we can make some room
