Sea-captain Clarke Cooke built the original house just across from the wharfs on Thames Street in 1780. Nearly 200 years later, as part of a plan to restore Bannister’s Wharf to its original glory as a commercial hub, David Ray purchased the building and spent six months moving it, piece-by-piece, to the wharf in 1973.

Newport is a vibrant, yet quaint, seaside resort community. Its charming character shines most brightly in the Spring & Summer months. Truly a “walking city” you can reach to the bustling waterfront, quiet colonial streets, magnificent mansions and some of the best beaches anywhere by foot, bike or trolley.
Her new book bravely draws on personal tragedy to redefine the idea of “Identity Thriller”.
A first glance there is nothing about Deborah Goodrich Royce that would belie the colorful and varied tapestry she has woven from her life’s experiences.
As an owner–along with her husband–of one of the country’s most famed seaside resorts, Rhode Island’s “Ocean House” her normal day is already full. Today she breezes through the lobby in a light blue and white sundress casually greeting staff and club members prior to sitting down for our interview. Perhaps most noticeable as we take our seats in the Veuve Clicquot “Secret Garden,” is her utter lack of pretention and a sense that she has the world-her world-perfectly under control.
The new book, “Reef Road” draws upon the calm outward exterior that she exudes and delves into a world inspired by personal, traumatic events. In it, she has created a detailed, layered work of fiction that will have readers griping their seats. Amazon says: “In a nod to the true crime that inspired it, Deborah Goodrich Royce’s Reef Road probes unhealed generational scars in a wrenching and original work of fiction. It is both stunning and sexy and, like a bystander surprised by a curtain left open, you won’t be able to look away.
I had the pleasure of spending nearly and hour speaking with Deborah on the hotel deck with expansive views of the Atlantic and passing rain showers creating a unique and mysterious mood suitable for discussing a murder mystery. In that brief time, she impressed me not only with the depth and candor of the personal elements she brings to the book but her deep and thorough understanding of the craft of authorship. Her energy is ever present and she is especially animated when she speaks of her life, travels and most of all her family.
The entire interview is a “must see”

The Newport Polo Gala never ever let’s you down. It truly is the ball of all balls. The energy is always there and the evening sweeps you away with views, romance, laughter and dancing. The attendees eyes are all a sparkle with sincerity, good will and cheer. This year Jeffrey Osborne took the people in hand, table by table and shared his microphone with enthusiastic song. The guests were so titulated that the Auctioneer had trouble reigning in the crowd from their enjoyment, but fundraise he did!
The 2022 ARTSCAPES Summer Soiree fundraiser event benefiting Island Moving Company – Newport’s Contemporary Dance Co was an unbelievably beautiful experience. Every turn a memorable site to behold. The performers prancing in every garden landscape at “The Bellevue House”. The front stage lounge seating for Randal and guests was the crowning moment which led to lots of laughs, dancing and a personal Chinese Dragon Dance performance.
A Special Thanks to Randal Poirier, ChFC, Financial Planner and his foundation “Doing Well by Doing Good” for participating as an important sponsor to IMC and their efforts to bring the arts and performances to Newport and supporting youth to carry on the arts in our community
Wow! This year’s Yappy Hour broke records for attendance and fundraising for the 20-year event. Guests gathered at ‘The Waves’ on Ledge Road where they met animals available for adoption at the Potter League and supported the organization’s work by joining in for a ‘Paw Raise’ to support the Nuala Pell Animal Care Fund.
The Nuala Pell Animal Care Fund ensures that homeless animals receive everything from basic care to treatment for serious medical issues. Thanks to these generous donors the thousands of animals that walk through our doors every day will continue to receive veterinary care, surgery, extensive rehabilitation, and life-saving medications often required before they can be placed in a loving home.
We cannot thank our generous hosts, Marc Lewinstein, Xana O’Neil, and the guest of honor Maalouf, who opened their home to fellow animal lovers enough. Their generosity, love and kindness for the Potter League and our animals is immensely appreciated.
We hope that you all had an incredible evening as we did. We were so grateful to be able to gather and see so many of our generous and wonderful friends. Thank you so much for making Yappy Hour a howling success!
Newport is known by many names; City by the Ocean, Sailing Capital of the World… but it is also home to some of the best kept summertime secrets in the Northeast.
Once again, Newport Living and Lifestyles opens the door on the best that Newport has to offer. A velvet rope gets set aside and you instantly have access to the Rooftop Bar atop The Vanderbilt Auberge Resort Hotel. Perched high on the hill that rises above the harbor in the Historic Hill neighborhood, this one-time mansion is now a luxe accommodation with a spa, library-lounge, a solarium patio for brunch and a cozy dark bar-restaurant where craft cocktails and the occasional secret are shared.
This night, the NL&L faithful gathered for drinks and small plates on the rooftop and Newport’s most epic harbor view. As the sun set over the bridge, cool breezes brought out the sweaters and shawls, but nothing could beat the warm glow of good friends, cocktails and fireworks.
