Join artist-in-residence, Nina Elder, for a fun and hands-on kite-making workshop to culminate her stay at the Norman Bird Sanctuary. Nina will share her artistic insights regarding erosion, landscape change, flight, wind, and human impacts on the land. Then participants will design and create their own kite.
Materials will be provided, but you are also encouraged to bring items that interest you, such as photos, texts, magazines, pieces of cloth, ribbons, trash. The kites are intended to be sculptures that channel your own creative inspiration. This program will become the basis for Nina’s major multi-media installation, Sedimental, which visitors will be able to explore on the Norman Bird Sanctuary campus in the year ahead.
Due to Piping Plover nesting season, we will not fly the kites on Third Beach, but participants are encouraged to fly the kites on their own time.
We Are The Wind is family-friendly and recommended for kids age 8 and older with a guardian. The workshop will be held indoors and ADA accessible.
The workshop will take place at the Sanctuary’s Coastal Education Center, which is a seasonal building without heat. Please dress accordingly.
