Veteran public radio journalist Shannon A. Mullen will discuss her first book, In Other Words, Leadership: How A Young Mother’s Weekly Letters to Her Governor Helped Both Women Brave the First Pandemic Year, at Charter Books in Newport, RI. The book presents the inspiring true story of a year-long correspondence between the current governor of Maine, Janet Mills, and a constituent who sent her weekly handwritten letters of support through the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The story’s intensely timely narrative features the letters as well as unedited excerpts from the governor’s personal journal and celebrates both the power of human connection and true leadership in tumultuous times. Mullen filed news and feature stories for national shows on public radio for two decades. Her work has also been published by The New Yorker, The Boston Globe and Boston Magazine among other outlets.
