Champagne, straw hats, Bermuda shorts and very dark sunglasses…that’s how you garden party in Newport. In fact, you could have walked right past this lively but tastefully hushed get-together and barley noticed from the sidewalk of Mill Ave in Newport’s toney Historic Hill Neighborhood.

Anchored by Bellevue Avenue to the South and America’s Cup Avenue to the West, The Historic Hill Neighborhood if one of Newport’s many colorful treasures. Composed of some of America’s most important Colonial and Federal Architecture, even an unguided walking tour will provide hours of viewing historic homes, small boutiques, art galleries, churches, patisseries a grand hotel and intimate Inns.

On Sunday, a small group of passionate and dedicated residents including State Representative Lauren Carson and Mayor & Jeanne Marie Napolitano, gathered at the home of Jan and Caroline Slee on Mill Street. Behind the stately Georgian style home—built in 1758,  the home of John Tillinghast, a representative to the Rhode Island General Assembly —a hidden gem awaits. Unseen from the street, a shade garden oasis awaits. Beds of “Elephant Ears” surround towering trees while a glistening azure pool and cabana beckon Cheeveresque swimmers on their journey.  This day, the assembled crowd made donations to the association while sipping champagne nibbling on shrimp hors d’oeuvres provided by THE POUR PEOPLE III. Local artist William Heydt, unveiled his new book of watercolors that features Newport residents inhabiting their favorite haunts throughout town.

Newport is a quaint resort community, and its charming character shines most brightly in the Spring & Summer months. Truly a “walking city” you can reach to the bustling waterfront, quiet colonial streets, magnificent mansions and some of the best beaches anywhere by foot, bike or trolley.
